How To Track and Manage Your Domain Names – The Best Domain Management Software

In this article - "How To Track and Manage Your Domain Names - The Best Domain Management Software" We're going to look at 1) How To Track and Manage Your Domain Names and then 2) The Best Domain Management Software

1) How To Track and Manage Your Domain Name

  • When people first start out they have maybe one and two domains names, and what they usually use to track them is "Nothing". If they're lucky, they put a note on a post-it, and hope they can count on their email records in Gmail.
  • People assume their Domain registrar will do it's job properly and there will be no issues (We personally had the experience of registering a domain for 10 years and the records "vanishing".. thankfully we caught it in time.. and still remembered our account details).
  • As people get more domains 5 to 10.. then start to rely on the domain registrars on domain system, and this is workable if all your domains are in one place and you can know exactly what you've done with the domains.
  • People can export this data to csv or excel, but rarely do in practice.
  • The data is there.. but is not working for us.. it's just the raw data and often is very technical - ie about the dns records etc..
  • People then start to build their own excel sheets and try google docs. However soon this becomes unwieldly, be it the lag times, or the inability to do complex searches quickly. Also the number of useful fields requires thinking through and people spend days and weeks trying to build something that might work.
  • More technical people build databases (again spending weeks. and costing themselves hundreds and thousands of dollars - in wages, opportunity cost and time)
  • Both the self made excel and more complex database plans.. have some pros and cons.. on the plus side.. you build them so they do what you want at the time, on the cons - they are difficult to build, manage and maintain, are not optimized for sharing data with your team, partners and outsourcers; each one is different and often people find themselves reinventing the wheel, time and time again.

There are a few attempts at building domain management software but these are often built by "domainers" who are focussed on people with 100,000 domain portfolios and are not looking to actively work with, and optimize their portfolios.

You want to know the software can:

  • scale with you
  • handle flexible data
  • handle tags
  • enable easy sharing with multiple parties
  • handle notes
  • handle complex search queries
  • be built for purpose

To that end.. we'd suggest you check out and try www.TheDomainDashboard.com - it's what we've been using to manage our domain portfolios for a while and share with all our clients and partners.

The Domain Dashboard has been called the killer web app for people interested in virtual real estate and who are looking to manage, maintain and optimize their web domains.

Web Domains – New Virtual Real Estate

Major players in internet marketing, investment and business and waking up to the potential of Web Domains as virtual real estate. This is a market that is still very untapped and one that you can take maximum advantage of through www.thedomaindashboard.com

So .. what is Virtual Real Estate?

This is a key question and one we share at length with our customers and partners.

Real Estate - is an industry that is very mature and most people are familiar with.

  • Land
  • Plots
  • Flats
  • Condos
  • Houses
  • Lease Options
  • Commercial Developments
  • Property Flipping
  • Property Dressing
  • Renting
  • ... the list goes on...

There are many many aspects of Real Estate, and many people making millions and billions in this space.

One of the main challenges in real Real Estate are:

  • Large capital outlay
  • Time and Risk of development
  • Slow time to transact
  • High inertia - physically moving, costs of move - surveys, legal
  • ...

Virtual Real Estate.

If you take the model of real world real estate, and move it to web world and domains.., then you get a start to the scope of Virtual Real Estate.

It is an industry and area that is still growing, and one that has remained relatively unknown to most people.

We'll be covering these subjects more in later articles, videos and trainings.

The best first step is to consider "Real Estate" in the real world.

TAGS 101 – Manage and Optimise Domains in The Domain Dashboard

The Second Step in building your online business,
is being able to act quickly.

The Speed of Implementation is a well known key success driver in business, and time and time again being able to access information that is complete, accurate and accessible is a vital part implementing ideas quickly.

Bad News

Online now there are millions (if not billions) of people trying to make money in almost every market known, and when new markets emerge people will rapidly explore them.

Good News

You have an incredible advantage, you have The Domain Dashboard in your toolbox.

The Domain Dashboard was designed with this in mind, and is going to be a vital part in your ability to implement faster than anyone else in the market (and even better news it's only going to get better and faster the more you use it)

Tags and Searching

Lets imagine you have all your own domains, your affiliates, partners and friend domains in The Domain Dashboard.

How would you be able to find the ones you want the information on?

How would you find the sites you need to use in a new launch, or ones you need to develop? Sites you want to auction off, or ones that you've just bought and need social media accounts opening up?

That's where the TAGS, and the other search fields come in. The more you index your websites with TAGS (that you are in control of and understand intuitively) the more distinctions you have of the domains, and more quickly you can find just what you're looking for.

In the next section, we'll tell you our suggestions about TAGS.

TAGS are a flexible way of grouping data, they are very powerful and will be sharing some case studies later on.

  • TAGS should be kept intelligent
  • TAGS should be grouped - eg Status-Live
  • TAGS can include numbers
  • TAGS are searchable inside The Domain Dashboard
  • TAGS are not public
  • You can always add NEW TAGS
  • You can always remove TAGS
  • TAGS are flexible
  • There is no "right way" to TAG

Examples of TAGS to inspire your creativity:

  • Status-New, Status-Live, Status-Auction
  • Red, Amber, Green (RAG Project Status)
  • Priority 1, Priority 2, etc..
  • Open Social Media
  • JV-Simon
  • Lead Page, Portal, Blog, Shop, SEO
  • Review-Q1, Review-Q2
  • Permanent, Core
  • Project-TDD01, TDD02, TDD03

Remember the TAGS are for you and your team, to be able to find, manage and work with your real online assets - Domains.

The best way to learn about TAGS is to experiment, but hopefully this has give you some food for thought.

If you want help managing your domains, or to learn more look out for the case study emails or contact support to book a 1-1 review session. www.thedomaindashboard.com

Key Actions to Take Now

Here's what we recommend you do now:

  2. Add some dummy or real domains
  3. Add multiple tags
  4. Start with tags for the status of the domain
  5. Then add tags based on your intent for the site
  6. Then add tags based on what type of site it is
  7. Try searching for the domains based on multiple tags (both and, or, or not included)
  8. Make sure you can find the domains which need your intention right now and then plan what to do, add that to the notes on the domains.

Next time we'll cover Importing Domains, and working with Domain Registrars.

The Domain Dashboard will help you simplify, automate and replicate your web based activities, and in so doing help you save time, energy and hassle.

I am our first and most raving fan user, and I know that The Domain Dashboard has saved me hundreds of hours, and made opportunities available and real that would otherwise have been missed.
